Job Overview and Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for providing analytical support to the Solvay Specialty Polymers research and product development programs by providing characterization solutions using broad range of advanced microscopy techniques, including SEM, TEM, optical microscope, hot stage microscopy, surface tension/contact angle measurements, and ultra-microtome (room temperature and cryogenic) sample preparation.
- Ensure compliance with HSE regulations. Ensure compliance with the specifications of the lab instrumentation.Attend and/or organize meetings with HSE to discuss issues, to make the own team aware of certain risks (e.g. new chemical).
- Analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes. Provide detail reports to internal and external customers.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers to oversee and conduct complex non-routine analyses, select optimum solutions, and perform corrective modifications to equipment and system designs.
- Carry out all activities, including troubleshooting and resolving routine problems for scientist or engineers, independently.
- Improve existing analytical procedures and develop new analytical procedures for special customer requirements.Implement good laboratory practices and follow standards as per requirement. Take care of the laboratory instrumentation efficiency and continuously improve turnaround time of microscopy lab.
- Serve as a resource in review of research proposals and research capabilities, and make recommendations.
- Develop and maintain training manuals and safety guidelines, and train new instrumentation users, researchers, and/or technical staff.
- Test the necessary laboratory instrumentation. Make technical recommendations regarding specification and purchase of instrumentation & contribute to developing new technologies.
- Participate, in scientist meetings, global alignment program, and develop relationships with internal customers. Participate in the communication with external laboratories and suppliers. Education and Experience Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, material science or related field, and five or more years of relevant experience in characterization instruments (SEM and TEM) OR a PhD in same fields with two or more years of SEM and TEM experience.
- Experience in the polymer field such as polymer fractography and failure analysis
- Extensive experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and performing special technical services involving both development and performance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with extrusion and molding processes.
- Experience with quantitative image analysis, such as size distribution
- Experience overseeing a laboratory space and supervising the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group
Skills Knowledge-Skills-Abilities:
- Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.
- Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations.
